Academic Salon of XIOPM in June, 2016

Academic Salon of XIOPM is a very interesting event. If you have problems which are not in your field, for example, your major is optics but you encounter a mechanical problem in optical design, you can sign your name on the white board and if there are more than 30 names on the board, we’ll hold a group meeting in the form of Salon to solve this kind of problem together, we invite several experts to give professional lectures and do some simulations, students can also demonstrate their ideas to others, this is an efficient way for those who are confused to understand how and why. Besides, there are several display panels with some eye-catching social hot spots, as contemporary postgraduates and Ph.D. students, we must care about what is going on in society.

National Doctoral Academic Forum on Optics & Photonics (XIOPM 2016) from Apr. 27th to 29th, 2016.

On the occasion of the centennial celebration of the OSA, through 5 months’ efforts and preparation, we successfully held the National Doctoral Academic Forum on Optics & Photonics (XIOPM 2016) http://ndaf2016.csp.escience.cn/dct/page/1, where 30 doctoral students from nation’s universities or institutes and 3 distinguished professors abroad presented lectures with a live audience of 300 from Apr. 27th to 29th, 2016. This was the first time for our OSA/SPIE student chapter to hold such a large-scale national conference. Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences Xun Hou, deputy director Xuelong Li as well as chapter president An Pan delivered opening speech respectively. Then Prof. Ci-ling Pan, vice president of National Tsing Hua University, a Fellow of APS, IEEE, OSA and SPIE, was invited to give a plenary talk entitled “Fiber-laser-based Noise-like-pulses: Generation, Characteristics and Applications.” Soon afterwards, Prof. Howard Carmichael from Auckland University, the pioneer of quantum trajectory theory and a fellow of APS and OSA, also gave a speech on “Sub-Poissonian Light of High Photon Number”. Finally, Prof. Yuao Chen from University of Science and Technology of China, the winner of 2013 Fresnel Prize, made a report entitled “Long-distance Quantum Key Distribution Network in China”. Besides, in the evening we cut a big cake with words “OSA 100 since 1916” on it. This event successfully provided a platform for academic exchanges, offering a direct connection between the world-leading scholars and students as well as a chance for studying abroad. This forum promoted the development of optical science and technology, helped students to widen their field of visions and improve professional skills, in addition, it significantly improved the influence of our institute and our OSA/SPIE Student Chapter.
